Recently 31 states recognize that cancer development in firefighters is likely due to conditions the firefighters were exposed to on the job. Why then is this not observed by every state?

 

One such reason may be the length of time it takes to develop the symptoms. One such cancer is Mesothelioma. Mesothelioma, a rare cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. Mesothelioma's biggest danger lies in the legnth of time it takes to see symptoms, which can take any where from 20-50 years. (20-30 years)

 

Another industry afflicted by high rates of mesothelioma asbestos exposure is the automotive industry. Recently there have been many cases in the United Kingdom dealing with asbestos related disease.

One of the major uses of asbestos was in the automotive industry, there is was used in breaks, clutches and gaskets. Vehicles manufactured today are still built with asbestos brakes and clutches, just in smaller quantities than older parts.

The asbestos fibers have the possiblity of staying in the air for such long periods of time and thus, this is where the problem lies. Wokers, who inhale small asbestos fibers, may later find themselves with life threatening diseases such as mesothelioma.

One major industry with asbestos exposure is the automobile industry where asbestos is used in high friction parts. Many times older vehicles will have asbestos material in the the break pads, mechanics working on these cars need to take great care against exposure.
